M 063 KERETA NASIONAL MALAYSIA

  KERETA NASIONAL MALAYSI=

Still very clear in my mind, the day when our national car launched by Dr Mahathir in 1985. I was serving in TUDM Kuantan and living in Taman TAS. The road show (around the country) also stop at the base. I was dreaming to have one but unfortunately the balance of my car loan (Nissan Pulsar) still very high, so it was too low to be traded in.  If I did so, I got to top up (definitely I could not afford)  and the monthly payment will be high, also I could not afford.  My salary at that time was about RM800/month. My brother Khamim (at that time working with TNB in Kuantan) managed to buy one and if not wrong the car registration number was CY 57.

I only managed to buy a second hand 'zamrud green' Proton Saga 1.5S (WBK 1718) in 1990 with the cost of RM22,500.  At that time I was staying in Shah Alam and working at MPPU. I could not remember how much the new Proton at that time.

The main purpose of selecting PROTON as one of the topics in my blog is 'to note and appreciate' the contribution of our 'mantan PM' in making our country as one of the car producers in the world.  Prior to this, never in our mind could imagine that one day in 20th century, Malaysia will be producing cars. Other than normal (within the box) infrastructure and social development, BEFORE and AFTER him, all our premiers were/are only came up with intangible concepts and slogans of development.

Putrajaya, Twin Tower, SIC, Proton, Perodua and UIA are some 'outside the box' ideas and inspirations were converted into reality.

BACK GROUND

Perusahan Otomobil Nasional Berhad (PROTON) was incorporated in May 7, 1983 to manufacture, assemble and sell motor vehicles and related products, including accessories, spare parts and other components. PROTON produced Malaysia's first car, the Proton Saga, commercially launched on July 9, 1985 by then Malaysian Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Mahathir Mohamed, who had originally conceived the idea of a Malaysian car.

Its model line-up includes the Waja, Satria GTi, Wira, Iswara, Arena, Perdana V6 and Juara. The range of 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines satisfies a wide spectrum of customers both locally and abroad. PROTON's main plant in Shah Alam, with an area of 923 900 sq metres, was originally designed for a capacity of 80 000 units per year. In 1997, capacity increased to 230 000 units per year with the construction of the Medium Volume Factory, which is next to the Main Plant. Today, the Shah Alam factory is capable of producing 240 000 vehicles per year.

Besides being shareholders, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation are also PROTON's technical assistance partner and component supplier. PROTON has a total of 11 subsidiaries and 11 associate companies, which are involved in manufacturing, research and development, sales and service activities.

December 30, 1996, marked the launch of the Proton Putra, a two-door coupe, as well the production of our millionth car from the Shah Alam plant. PROTON made a major step in upgrading its engineering capabilities with the acquisition of Lotus Group International Limited, a British automotive engineering company and manufacturer of luxury sports cars in October 1996. Together, PROTON and Lotus offer large scale manufacturing capabilities with world-class engineering expertise.

PROTON cars are making their mark internationally as competitive and innovative automobiles. They are now being exported to 50 countries including the highly competitive United Kingdom and continental European markets. With concerted and unswerving commitment from customers, business associates, shareholders, government agencies, and employees, PROTON is realising its goal of being an internationally successful Malaysian automotive manufacturer. It is achieving this by being customer oriented and by producing competitively priced and innovative products. Thus, it is contributing to Malaysia's attainment of Vision 2020.

With solid base built up over the last 10 years, Malaysia's car manufacturing industry is progressing vigorously. Below are important events that led to the incorporation of Perusahan Otomobil Nasional Berhad (PROTON) and its achievements.

2012 marked a new phase for PROTON. From a Government-Linked Company, the national car-maker is now a private entity following its takeover by DRB-HICOM Berhad. With DRB-HICOM's experience as Malaysia's largest manufacturer of automobiles, the company is confident in transforming PROTON and also LOTUS as globally-recognised automotive players.

To reiterate the company's commitment, PROTON successfully launched the Prevé in Australia, Thailand and Brunei within months after the official launch in April 2012. Group LOTUS launched the LOTUS Originals flagship store in Regent Street London and the new Exige S in July 2012. At home in Kuala Lumpur, LOTUS Cars Malaysia in January 2013 opened its first Flagship Showroom and Centre in Sg Penchala and introduced two new cars to Malaysian customers – the Exige S and the Elise S.

In December 2012, PROTON acquired all engine technologies and knowledge developed by PETRONAS since 1997, a significant milestone which signified more exciting things for PROTON moving forward.

With the acquisition, PROTON now have ownership of a more powerful yet fuel efficient family of naturally aspirated and turbocharged 2.0L engines, as well as a 2.2L turbocharged version to complement its existing CAMPRO engine line-up. This move also ensured that the PETRONAS-developed engines will remain Malaysian and for the Malaysian people to experience and enjoy through the introduction of the engines in PROTON's existing and future models.

Additionally, the agreement gave PROTON access to the Spray-Guided Gasoline Direct Injection technology, which was co-developed by PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd with a well renowned engineering firm. This technology, which helps increase engine performance and improve fuel efficiency drastically, will propel PROTON to a different playing field, to offer its customers exciting and competitive vehicle line-ups in the future.
